Job Description
Reporting to the laboratory manager, the laboratory supervisor assists with day-to-day supervision of assigned lab personnel, assists with implementing lab safety and quality programs, trains lab staff on the use of equipment and procedures, and performs a full range of routine and specialized procedures in the pathology laboratory. The lab supervisor serves as a technical resource for troubleshooting and uses independent judgment and resources to resolve problems. This position has direct reports.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Perform tasks normally associated with supervision such as hiring, training, coaching, scheduling, directing, and appraising the work of assigned staff
- Serve in a working supervisor role and perform the work of those supervised
- Hold regularly scheduled one-on-ones with direct reports on at least a monthly basis
- Advocate for direct reports regarding ensuring ideas are heard/shared and in their career progression planning and efforts
- Maintain accurate records
- Adhere to the laboratory’s quality-control policies, document all quality-control activities, and maintain a clean and well-organized work area
- Maintain proficiency and training requirements
- Ensure compliance with all local, federal, and CLIA regulations
- Participate in inventory management and special projects and perform other duties as assigned by management
- Assist in staff development and training
- Assist the laboratory manager in the maintenance/upkeep of CLIA documentation and records (including supervising/verifying completion of daily records and tracking documents) and preparation for CAP and CLIA inspections
- Communicate with pathologists regarding laboratory issues and client’s needs and respond quickly and efficiently to concerns/feedback regarding histology within the lab
- Track and monitor laboratory quality indicators
- Answer technical questions from pathologists and clients regarding lab processes and histology workflows
- Independently and proactively identify problems in the laboratory and institute appropriate corrective actions
- Ensure operational compliance with the laboratory’s SOPs and quality-management systems

Licensure/Education/Experience Requirements
- Associate’s degree in histology, biology, chemistry, or other related field (bachelor’s degree is preferred); degree must satisfy the CLIA standards for grossing surgical specimens (12 course hours of biology and chemistry combined)
- Five or more years of experience in the histology field
- Hold and maintain the HT or HTL (ASCP) certification
- May accept additional education and/or experience in lieu of certification when certification is not a jurisdictional requirement for the job
