Job Description

Under the supervision of the laboratory manager, the lab assistant will accession laboratory specimens, log specimens, handle specimen requests for testing, pull and file paperwork, and help digitize specimens.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate labeling, accessioning, and processing of patient specimens according to established procedures
  • Complete paperwork and prepare specimens for courier pickup
  • Record slides that need to be scanned on the slide-scanning log
  • Load and operate slide scanners
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of cover-slipping equipment
  • Act as specimen runner, placing barcoded samples in instrument racks and moving racks to automated instruments as directed by supervisors
  • Recognize factors that may affect testing outcomes
  • Identify supply needs, maintain inventory, and order supplies as directed by the lab manager
  • Complete daily QC checks and environmental logs
  • Scan documents
  • Collect and enter data
  • Receive specimens
  • File slides, blocks, and paperwork in alpha-numeric order
  • Assist with other general lab processes and clerical duties as needed

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous clerical or administrative experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment and processes
  • One year of data entry experience (preferred)
  • At least one year of lab experience
  • Ability to manage a multitude of tasks at any given time
  • Basic skill in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
