
Lead Histology Technician
Salt Lake City, UT (Relocation Assistance Available)
Two Positions:
1) Monday to Friday Nights, third shift
2) Wednesday to Saturday, 10-hour shift
$35 to $40/hr, based on experience, education, and certifications held
Up to $2,000 sign-on bonus for qualified candidates

Job Description
Under the general supervision of the pathologist and the lab manager, the lead histology technician will perform all the same tasks as the histology technicians—such as preparing tissue specimens by treating them with chemicals, slicing them, and mounting them on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis—and provide leadership and guidance to the histology technicians on their shift.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and guidance to Histology Techs on his/her shift, will instruct and training Histology Techs and may perform more complicated tasks
- Receive and accession anatomic pathology specimens as well as perform other routine technical procedures
- Perform tissue grossing, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and a variety of staining procedures as required
- Prepare slides for digital scanning and/or send-outs as requested
- Adhere to laboratory quality-control policies by documenting all quality-control activities while maintaining a clean and well-organized work area to prevent cross contamination
- Observe health and safety protocols during all cleanup procedures to minimize risks to self and coworkers
- Perform preventive maintenance and quality-control procedure on laboratory equipment according to SOP and manufacturer recommendations
- Maintain direct communication and follow-up to all necessary patient care/laboratory tasks
- Other duties as assigned by the histology manager
Skills and Abilities
Spatial ability to perceive three-dimensional and geometric relationships when cutting paraffin blocks and making embedding molds
Finger dexterity to manipulate the micro-thin tissue sections and mount them onto microscope slides
Color discrimination to verify diagnostic the quality of staining processes so essential features of tissue sections can be properly defined
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in biology or other related science field (bachelor of science in biology or related science field preferred)
- ASCP HT/HTL certified or eligibility to sit for the certification exam required
- Meet state and federal requirements for the position and duties to be performed
- Previously worked in the histology field for three years
